It’s the start of our week long plastic free living challenge (running Monday 23rd July to Sunday 29th July) & the whole MightyFine & Coxy’s team is taking part, follow our progress on Instagram using the hashtag #myplasticfreeweek & on our Twitter & Facebook page also. We’ve chosen now to try it as part of #plasticfreejuly which is an international movement steadily increasing awareness & spreading the message that our world dependence on plastic must end. We think this will be an interesting & possibly at times a challenging & frustrating week, we are trying this as a team as an experiment, we want to learn how to do things better both on a personal level & within the business too. We aren’t making any big claims to be perfect & we don’t even know if it’s possible to be completely plastic free, so any plastic we accumulate over the week we will collect & photograph (see the plastic punnet my Strawberries came in this morning).
In terms of what we do as a business, we try our best to be ethical & responsible, we weigh up any decisions we make & do them with the best intentions. So far we have;
Stopped using plastic at all our markets & bar events
Started using recyclable paper straws for our drinks
Started using recyclable paper cups for our drinks
Started using biodegradable bubble wrap as part of our packaging, along with recyclable card boxes
We’ve always used glass bottle & jars, which we encourage customers to recycle or reuse at home
Earlier this year we launched a MightyFine Fresh range at our local food hall, Macknade Fine Foods in Faversham, the range includes fresh dips, salads & bakes. Some of the items are sold in recyclable paper bags, the dips we package in compostable deli tubs & the rest is sold in recyclable plastic tubs. The aim of this partnership with Macknade is to forge a new relationship with food, both for us & for our customers. We hate to see good food go to waste, so we work closely with Macknade to minimise their food wastage, we use ugly veg & produce nearing the end of it’s shelf life to re-invent into flavour filled, fresh & nutritious food. Ultimately we would love to promote a system where customers can bring reusable containers from home & therefore drastically reduce the amount of single use plastic, but it’s a new project & an ongoing work in progress.
We love to hear the ideas & suggestions of our customers, especially if they mean ways to do things better that we hadn’t thought of. So please get in touch via our social media accounts & tell us what you want, what you do & support us in trying to do the right thing.
